Tooth-Coloured Fillings in Red Deer County AB
Dental caries (caused by decay) are what we commonly refer to as “having cavities.” Sometimes, dental caries can be visible and easy to spot, while other times x-rays and photos are necessary to detect decay that is below the gumline, under a crown, or in other areas that aren’t clearly visible. When we discover dental caries caused by decay, we need to treat them; when they are cleaned up, the result that is left behind are cavities or holes that we need to fill.
There are two kinds of filling materials typically used in general dentistry in Central Alberta: tooth-coloured fillings (composite) and silver fillings (amalgam).
Tooth-Coloured (Composite) Fillings in T4E 0A5
Here at Gasoline Alley Dental, Dr. Whitehead and our staff primarily use tooth-coloured composite, although the option to choose an amalgam (silver) filling material is always available upon request.
Tooth-coloured fillings are made up of a composite resin material and are quite strong and durable. Since they are very similar in colour to natural teeth, they are the most popular and aesthetically pleasing fillings among our patient family here at Gasoline Alley Dental in Red Deer. With improvements in technology and manufacturing in the dental industry over the years, tooth-coloured composites have become a very reliable and sound treatment choice for filling cavities.
Silver (Amalgam) Fillings
Silver fillings, which we refer to as amalgam fillings, are composed of a mixture of metals and are very strong and usually last a very long time. Because of the strength and durability of amalgam, most patients who request it as a filling material choose to use it to fill cavities in their molars, which sustain the most biting pressure.
If you want to know more about filling materials and the choices that are available to you, don’t hesitate to ask at your next appointment!
Dr. Whitehead and our staff are firm believers in preventative dentistry. This means that at Gasoline Alley Dental we encourage all our patients to be active participants in maintaining healthy gums and teeth by brushing and flossing twice a day as well as coming in for routine dental exams, x-rays, and cleanings. That way we can stay ahead of dental caries (cavities) or take care of them as soon as possible. A clean, healthy mouth is a happy mouth, and that makes us happy too!
